A project for Italy and Greece

The objectives of the CNO Program of Traceability

Through its active program of traceability of extra virgin olive oil, the CNO has established a series of important objectives, such as the facilitation of the maintenance of at least 30 production certificates and the addition of techno-analytic parameters which help define better standards of quality for the system of retraceability. This second objective is part of the methodology for promoting and facilitating the extension and certification of a specification of high quality oils. In order to be able to guarantee the traceability to the final customer in the most complete manner, the programme aims not only to involve all the segments of production in the process of retraceability to a greater extent but also to involve the last in the line, e.g. the packagers. Furthermore, the CNO has created a system for managing communication with the final consumer by means of SMS and QR code and has established the goal of insuring the involvement of the consumers of three non-producing countries, Germany, Holland and Russia, in the process of retraceability. Finally the Programme aims at introducing the system of retraceability in conformity with the norm 22005:08 and necessary technical assistance to new, associated producers and presses, and to certify new olive oil products that better fulfill the requirements of norm ISO 22005:08.

Also producers from a sector of Greece with whom the CNO shares the standards of traceability and the promotion and facilitation of the extension and certification of a specification of high quality oils common to both countries, will participate in this active programme.

A project for Italy and Greece

The project of traceability and high quality extra virgin olive oil of the CNO has been developed in partnership with Greece and, specifically, with four cooperatives on the Island of Crete: Sitia, Peza, Milopotamos and Mirabello. First and foremost, the project has planned a common strategy for the management of a retraceability system between the operators of the two countries. These operators share the models of the retraceability manuals and the technical specifications developed by both countries. Furthermore, a retraceability manual of the specifications of high quality oils in Italy and Greece has been generated and it is being applied, that is, its control mechanisms are being carried out. The Italian and Greek operators involved in the project will share the verification of information systems for the creation of a data base, from which the information will be available for the generation of SMS and information via QR codes.

This work has been possible thanks to the meetings of the technicians of the two countries for enabling an interchange of the different organisation systems of the production processes and of the management of the flow of material and of the information collected for the handling of traceability. In these meetings, the different information systems available are constantly checked out in order to gather possible analogies and integration.

As a natural evolution of the activity of the circulation, extension and certification of a specification of high quality, the intention is to promote the sharing of a series of services, activities and information among the protagonists of the production process in order to encourage the production, transformation and commercialization of extravirgin olive oil of elevated quality from within the traced process.

The protagonists who participate in this process, benefit from a system of relations and contacts that enable the transformation, packaging and distribution operations to interact amongst themselves and the agricultural realities involved in the programme as if it were more a functional union of a single, large, relocated enterprise.

The partnership with Greece

The activities concerning retraceability are to be carried out in partnership with Greece and particularly with the four cooperatives shown on the following table, which have presented a programme of activities in accordance with Reg. CE 867/08e.

The following steps are to be carried out:

  • Establish the activities and fine-tune a common strategy to manage the retraceability amongst operators
  • Share the models of the manuals of retraceablity, normalise the technical disciplines carried out by the two countries and apply diverse models of retraceability on the part of the Territorial Organisations
  • Promote and give preference to the extension and certification of the production of “Alta qualità” in Italy
  • Utilise the retraceability manual, along with its application and controls, in Italy and Greece
  • Verify the information systems and their utilisation in the diverse steps of production
  • Create a system of managing the SMS
  • Produce videos and minisites with the objective of propagating traceability by means of the QR-Code system
  • Set up a communication system of retraceability of production by using a marker on the label (enlarged reality)
